📋 Cession ratio is the proportion of an insurer's written or earned premium that it transfers to reinsurers under its reinsurance program, expressed as a percentage. In the context of insurance financial analysis, this metric reveals how much risk a ceding company is passing along versus retaining on its own balance sheet. A carrier writing $500 million in gross written premium that cedes $200 million would carry a cession ratio of 40 percent.

⚙️ Analysts compute the ratio by dividing ceded premium by gross written or earned premium for a given period. The figure fluctuates based on the structure and volume of a company's reinsurance arrangements — a heavy user of quota share treaties will show a higher cession ratio than one relying primarily on excess-of-loss covers, which transfer fewer premium dollars relative to the exposure ceded. Companies may also adjust their cession ratios strategically: a startup MGA-backed carrier might cede 70 percent or more while building its surplus, whereas a well-capitalized national insurer may cede only 15 to 20 percent, retaining the bulk of its underwriting profit.
