Overview

👨‍💼 Executive leadership profile. Patrick Cohen is a French business leader currently serving as Chief Executive Officer of AXA European Markets & Health and a member of AXA’s Group Management Committee.[1][2] In this role, he oversees AXA’s insurance operations across multiple European countries and leads the development of AXA’s international health insurance business unit.[2] Cohen assumed this position in 2023 after a successful tenure as CEO of AXA France (2019–2023) – AXA’s largest market – and CEO of AXA Italy (2016–2021).[3]

📈 Transformation and growth. With over 25 years of experience spanning consumer goods, consulting, and insurance, he is known for his broad international perspective and transformational leadership style.[1] Widely regarded as an innovative and customer-centric executive, Cohen earned a reputation for turning around and modernizing AXA’s regional businesses. At AXA Italy, he was credited with “digitalizing the company and [maintaining] a strong focus on customers,” according to AXA Group CEO Thomas Buberl.[4] Under Cohen’s guidance, AXA’s Italian division achieved profitable growth above the market average and gained market share through a strategy emphasizing innovation, client satisfaction, and societal impact.[3] This track record, combined with his cross-industry background, has positioned Cohen as a key figure in AXA’s global strategy execution going into the 2024–2026 period.[2]

Early life and education

🌍 Multicultural family roots. Patrick Cohen was born on June 26, 1973 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.[5] He describes himself as “a cocktail... the fruit of diverse origins” – his family heritage is a blend of Mediterranean roots and Eastern European lineage.[5] Cohen was profoundly influenced by his grandparents; his paternal grandfather was a self-made entrepreneur who taught him the importance of ambition and hard work.[5] Meanwhile, his maternal grandmother exposed him to arts and languages, instilling in him a passion for music and an international outlook.[5] Growing up with these dual influences, Cohen developed a balanced personality: part entrepreneur and part humanist, combining business acumen with cultural sensitivity. He was also an avid football player in his youth, preferring the role of a team-focused leader rather than a solo star, which was an early hint of his collaborative leadership philosophy.[5]

🎓 Academic and strategic foundation. Shaped by a cosmopolitan upbringing, Cohen pursued higher education at one of France’s elite business schools. He earned a Master of Science in Marketing from ESCP Business School in Paris, graduating in 1996 with a solid foundation in strategic marketing and management.[1] This academic background in marketing influenced his professional outlook by emphasizing customer insight, brand strategy and analytical rigor – skills he carried into his early career in consumer goods and beyond. Cohen’s formal training, combined with his fluency in multiple languages, prepared him to navigate international business environments. Throughout his career, he would later credit his education and early multicultural experiences for giving him the “toolkit and mindset to adapt to different industries and cultures.”[6]

Career trajectory

Early career (the foundation)

🥤 Consumer goods marketing. Patrick Cohen launched his career in the mid-1990s in the fast-moving consumer goods sector, where he honed his marketing and management skills. In 1996, fresh out of ESCP, he joined PepsiCo France as a Brand Manager.[1] At PepsiCo he gained hands-on experience in product marketing and brand strategy in a highly competitive industry.[1] He then moved to German consumer products firm Henkel (France) as a Marketing Manager, further building expertise in marketing campaigns and product positioning.[6]

🇮🇹 International management experience. By the early 2000s, Cohen’s career took an international turn: he assumed a role at Palmera – an Italian fast-moving consumer goods company – as Marketing & Sales Director, based in Italy.[4] Serving at Palmera from 2001 to 2004, he not only learned to conduct business in Italian but also developed a knack for driving growth in a different cultural context.[4] This period in the FMCG sector provided Cohen a strong foundation in consumer-centric thinking, cross-border teamwork and commercial strategy.

💼 Strategy consulting transition. In 2004, Cohen pivoted to strategy consulting – a move that would redirect his path toward financial services. He joined McKinsey & Company as an Engagement Manager, focusing on advising major insurance and banking institutions.[1] For the next three years (2004–2007), he worked on strategic projects for insurance clients at McKinsey’s Milan office, leveraging his marketing background to tackle challenges in the insurance sector.[4] This consulting stint was transformative: it gave Cohen deep exposure to the inner workings of insurance businesses and confirmed his interest in the financial industry. It also allowed him to develop a broad professional network and a reputation as a problem-solver. By the end of his McKinsey tenure, Cohen had amassed a unique dual expertise – consumer marketing and insurance strategy – that set the stage for his rise in the corporate world.

The rise (pre-management committee roles)

🏦 Global strategy at GE. Leaving consulting in 2007, Patrick Cohen transitioned into senior operational roles in large multinational companies, where he distinguished himself through innovative leadership. He joined General Electric (GE) that year, at a time when GE was expanding its financial services and consumer finance operations. Cohen took on a series of global marketing and strategy positions at GE Money/GE Capital: he served as Vice President of Global Strategic Marketing (2007–2008) and then as Marketing Director for Western Europe (2008–2009).[6] By 2009, he rose to Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer for GE’s Global Banking segment, where he was responsible for worldwide marketing strategy in GE’s finance division.[6]

🌏 Leading growth initiatives. In these roles at GE, Cohen developed a talent for driving growth initiatives across diverse markets. He led international teams and crafted product strategies for consumer lending and banking services, experience that broadened his managerial scope beyond marketing into general management.[4] This period also tested his adaptability – managing during the 2008–09 global financial crisis – and earned him recognition for his strategic acumen within a complex global corporation.

🍫 Pivot to insurance sector. In 2010, Cohen briefly returned to the consumer industry, joining Italian confectionery leader Ferrero as Head of Business Development for emerging markets.[4] Although this stint at Ferrero lasted only about a year, it added to his diverse experience as he was tasked with expanding Ferrero’s presence in new markets. By 2012, however, Patrick Cohen fully pivoted to the insurance sector, which would become the core of his career. He was recruited by Zurich Insurance Group, where he initially served as Global Head of Customers, Distribution & Marketing.[1][6] In this global executive role, he shaped customer strategy and distribution channels for Zurich’s insurance offerings, leveraging the insights he had gained as a consultant.

🇬🇧 Operational leadership success. His success led to rapid advancement: in 2015, Zurich appointed Cohen as Managing Director for Personal Lines in the United Kingdom, putting him in charge of one of Zurich’s key business units with profit-and-loss responsibility.[6] This UK posting gave Cohen direct operational leadership experience in a major insurance market, rounding out his credentials as a seasoned insurance executive. In late 2016, Patrick Cohen embarked on a new chapter with AXA – the French insurance giant – marking the beginning of his “rise” to the top echelon of the industry. He joined AXA in November 2016 as the Chief Executive Officer (General Manager) of AXA Italy, the group’s Italian subsidiary.[7]

🚀 Transforming AXA Italy. Upon his appointment, Cohen brought roughly 20 years of multi-industry experience, including a decade in Italy, to AXA’s Italian operations.[7] Over the next five years (2016–2021), he led AXA Italy through a significant transformation and growth phase. Under his leadership, AXA Italy consolidated its position as one of AXA’s top 10 global markets with about 4 million customers and 650 insurance agencies in Italy.[3] The Italian division achieved profitable growth and gained market share, even in challenging years, by focusing on digital innovation and customer satisfaction.[3]

🏥 Innovation and inclusivity. Cohen championed initiatives in health insurance and telemedicine that made AXA Italy a standout in those segments, and he prioritized addressing major societal challenges through insurance solutions.[3] Internally, he drove a cultural shift toward agility and inclusivity: during his tenure, AXA Italy implemented progressive inclusion policies that earned it certification as a “Top Employer” in Italy.[3] Cohen’s turnaround of AXA Italy did not go unnoticed; in March 2021, Thomas Buberl praised “the remarkable work [Cohen achieved] in Italy with the digitalization of the company and a great focus on customers.”[4] This success set the stage for Patrick Cohen’s next promotion: in May 2021, he was selected to take the helm of AXA’s core market, France.[3][8]

Current mandate (executive leadership)

AXA France (2021–2023)

🇫🇷 Leading AXA France. Patrick Cohen was appointed Chief Executive Officer (Directeur Général) of AXA France effective May 3, 2021, succeeding Jacques de Peretti.[8] This role made him responsible for AXA’s largest operating unit – France accounts for roughly one-quarter of AXA Group’s global revenues.[4] Upon taking charge in Paris, Cohen also joined AXA’s Group Management Committee, the top executive team steering overall strategy.[3] Leading AXA France was a significant step up, as it entailed overseeing a multi-line insurance business with tens of billions in revenue and thousands of employees.

💡 Digital strategic implementation. Cohen’s mandate included implementing the group’s “Driving Progress 2023” strategic plan in France – a plan focused on simplifying operations and accelerating strategic priorities in a post-Covid environment.[4] He set out to continue the digital transformation of AXA France and to strengthen its market leadership across all segments.[4] During his time as AXA France CEO, Patrick Cohen maintained his focus on innovation and customer-centric initiatives. He championed support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and drove the promotion of inclusive insurance solutions amid an uncertain economic climate.

🗣️ Industry advocacy role. Cohen also became a prominent voice in the French insurance industry: in June 2022, he was elected President of the French Federation of Insurance Corporations (FFSAA) for a three-year term.[6] This role testified to the esteem he garnered among industry peers. As FFSAA president, Cohen advocated for the insurance sector’s crucial role in tackling contemporary challenges – from climate risk to cyber threats to healthcare – calling for unity, boldness, and creativity among insurers.[6] His stewardship at AXA France was marked by solid financial performance and ongoing transformation in line with group strategy, setting a strong foundation for the next strategic cycle.[4]

Group role – CEO European markets & health (2023–present)

🇪🇺 European operations oversight. In July 2023, Patrick Cohen transitioned to an even broader role within AXA’s top leadership. He was named CEO of AXA European Markets & Health, as part of an overhaul of AXA’s Management Committee in preparation for the group’s new strategic plan.[2] In this position, Cohen reports directly to AXA Group CEO Thomas Buberl and holds two main responsibilities. First, he oversees AXA’s insurance operations across Europe – including major markets like France, Germany, the UK, Spain, Belgium, and Italy – essentially coordinating strategy and performance for AXA’s European entities.[2] Second, he was tasked with creating and developing a new international Health business unit to accelerate growth in health insurance and services, a priority area for AXA’s future.[2] This role capitalizes on Cohen’s experience in both country management and innovation in healthcare.

🔑 Strategic plan execution. Cohen’s appointment came as AXA launched its “Unlock the Future” strategic plan for 2024–2026, and he is a key figure in executing this vision. Thomas Buberl highlighted that “Patrick has successfully led AXA France, both in terms of transformation and performance” and expressed confidence in Cohen to take on oversight of European operations.[2] In his new mandate, Cohen quickly set to work on strategic initiatives. For example, under his leadership AXA has made bold moves to grow its European footprint: in 2024–2025, AXA executed major acquisitions in Italy, including purchasing Nobis and a €500 million deal for a 51% stake in digital insurer Prima Assicurazioni.[9]

📊 Growth and acquisition. These moves added nearly 7 million customers to AXA’s base in Italy when combining Prima with AXA’s existing portfolio, while reinforcing AXA’s multichannel strategy.[9] Likewise, across Europe he has overseen investments in technology and data to improve customer experience and operational efficiency, in line with the new plan’s pillars of growth and “technical excellence.” By late 2025, Cohen noted that the European Markets & Health division was on track to deliver the targets of the Unlock the Future plan, thanks to a focus on customer-driven and tech-enabled transformation.[10] He also continues to coordinate with country CEOs to ensure alignment with AXA’s global priorities.[10]

🔮 Future outlook. As of February 2026, Patrick Cohen’s mandate centers on steering AXA’s European operations through a dynamic insurance landscape – navigating economic uncertainties and evolving customer needs – while building up AXA’s international health franchise. He remains based in Paris and frequently engages with stakeholders across the region. Notably, he serves as Chairman of the Board of Prima Assicurazioni, reflecting his hands-on involvement in AXA’s digital ventures.[11] Industry observers describe Cohen as a “strategic doer” – equally comfortable formulating high-level strategy and rolling up his sleeves to implement initiatives on the ground. His balanced experience in both insurance and adjacent sectors continues to inform AXA’s push for innovation and growth under the current strategic cycle.

Personal life

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family and heritage. Outside of his corporate responsibilities, Patrick Cohen leads a grounded personal life guided by family, culture, and a passion for the arts. He is married and is a father of three children; he met his wife while working in Italy in the 2000s.[5] Having spent a significant portion of his career in Italy, Cohen raised his family there through the 2010s before the family relocated back to France when he took on the AXA France role in 2021.[5] Now based in the Paris area, Cohen is fluent in French, English, and Italian, and conversant in other languages – a reflection of his multicultural upbringing and international career. He often mentions that exposing his children to different cultures has been a great joy and source of pride.[5]

🎹 Passion for music. A defining aspect of Cohen’s personal life is his passion for music. An accomplished amateur musician, he learned to play the piano at a young age and later took up the guitar.[5] Music is, in his own words, his “deep passion” and emotional outlet – “if I don’t play for 48 hours, I feel something is missing,” he says.[5] In his younger years, he even performed in bands and jam sessions; he fondly recalls playing for hours during France’s Fête de la Musique festivals, at times until his fingers were numb.[5] Nowadays, despite a busy schedule, he still finds time for music and has been known to play piano or guitar at company gatherings to connect with employees on a human level.[5]

Sports and leadership. In addition to music, Cohen remains a sports enthusiast who enjoys football and often draws analogies from the sport to leadership. He likens his style to that of a “midfield captain” who works for the team’s success rather than personal glory, a philosophy he says he has carried into his work life.[5] When it comes to work-life philosophy, Patrick Cohen believes in leading with passion, authenticity, and teamwork. He credits his family values for keeping him grounded and has emphasized the importance of treating the company one leads “as if it were your own,” instilling a sense of ownership and accountability in himself and his teams.[5]

⚖️ Balanced approachable style. He is known to be approachable with colleagues, favoring first names and open dialogue, and to maintain a positive energy even under pressure.[5] Balance is also a theme: Cohen strives to balance innovation with pragmatism, and professional drive with personal well-being. As an executive who navigates high-stakes responsibilities, he finds solace in his personal passions – his family, music, and sports – which provide him perspective and resilience. This well-rounded approach to life and leadership has endeared Patrick Cohen to many in his organization, contributing to his image as not just a successful executive, but a relatable and visionary leader who inspires by example.
